Water and garden features – adding to the appeal of any outdoor or indoor area

We all love the tranquility of nature – there is nothing more soothing to the soul than being outdoors amongst the trees and by running water whether it be a river or stream. As we all cannot have trees and streams in our gardens, why not consider adding water features? Water features add just that little bit of extra appeal to a garden as well as any outdoor arena’s and even shopping centres. Scientific studies have proven that running water has a soothing effect on the troubled mind, in fact it has been “prescribed” as a healing technique for people that suffer with anxiety.

Garden features are easy enough to have in your back yard. You can choose from one that is a natural rock formation or a made of cement in an artistic design, the choice is entirely yours. Go for garden features that will blend in with your garden landscape. For example, if your garden has more of a rustic, natural feel to it then garden features made from natural materials like rocks and stones would be a better option. If you have a more manicured garden with neat and tidy flower beds, then the route to take is more towards artistic and elaborate garden features.

Water features and garden features need not be only restricted to outdoor areas, try indoors as well. A small semi rock water feature or a small concrete or ceramic garden feature in the entranceway of a home will lend a very inviting atmosphere. If you have a small garden courtyard then add a little bit extra to the courtyard with a garden or water feature.

Water features at shopping centres

Have you ever noticed how many major shopping centres have water features? This is actually a very clever marketing ploy. The reason for this is due to the fact that water tends to have a calming effect and by have water features in malls, you are creating a calming effect on the customers which in turn leads to spending more time in the malls and spending more money! It also adds to the look and feel of malls.

Water features with the “wow” factor

Have you ever been privileged enough to see water features (water displays) in a public arena (a park or a man-made dam)? If not then you should definitely consider making a plan too as the displays are breathtaking. To make a water display more appealing to the public, lights are included in the actual show and when the lights shine through the water it makes for an absolutely magical experience!

Keeping your water features and swimming pools in tip top shape this winter!

Yes winter is finally upon us and the last thing you really want to do is any type of outdoor “garden” activity. You look at your water feature and swimming pool and think to yourself – why bother? They will only be needed to be used again in summer. That is where you could definitely encounter problems. By leaving your water features and swimming pools unattended in winter months, come summer there will be such a build-up of algae that it will probably take you the better part of summer to clear it!

If you want to add more character to your garden and you have the space, then consider water features. Just make sure that you buy the correct pump when having one installed so that the water in your feature stays clean the whole year round. There is nothing worse than a pond or water feature being taken over by algae and once your water feature gets full of algae it is a mission to get it clean again! The trick with any water feature is having the water circulating all the time. Check the pump regularly to make sure that it is still in working condition and that it doesn’t need replacing. If you find that there is the start of algae growth in your feature then take a wire scrubbing brush and gently brush it off the sides. The continual flow of water will remove the algae that you brushed from the sides, from the water feature.

It would be absolutely wonderful if we could swim outdoors the whole year round, but sadly that cannot be so as much time and effort as you put into the upkeep of swimming pools in summer must also be done in winter. In summer the pool pump is on daily to circulate the water but not in winter as the swimming pool does not get used. Here are some easy tips to follow to a clean pool in winter:

  • Check the sides of the pool for any possible algae growth
  • Have the pump on at least every second day to circulate the water
  • As important as back-washing your pool is in summer, it is just the same in winter and should be done once a month
  • Chemicals are important but as the pool is not being used as often, the chemicals do not have to be put in bi-weekly. Once a week is more than enough.
  • Check that your pump and filter are working 100% and if not, get them checked by a pool expert.

Following these simple steps will help keep water features and swimming pools clean and sparkling all year round!

Creative water features to adorn your garden

Running water has a calming effect, doesn’t it? For some unknown reason we find that sound to be tranquil and relaxing. Whether you opt for buying an affordable premade fountain or decide to build your own, you’re bound to get some great inspiration from various types of features that highlight nature’s most important element – water! Try some of these water feature ideas to change the look of your garden:

  • Simple urn feature – the simplicity of an urn fountain is that it can be a rustic or classy feature in a garden as it isn’t too fancy or overbearing. Just make sure that your pot or urn is specifically designed to remain outdoors so that this will last and make it through all weather conditions.
  • Water wall – An outdoor water wall is without a doubt one of the most striking and visually stunning garden features. What makes it even more amazing is the fact that you can make it with your own two hands! At a minimal cost your wall water feature will add a waterfall effect to your garden area. If you have one of those round glass-top tables that you’re not sure what to do with, you should really consider using that glass piece to create a water wall. Repurposing materials will make this an affordable build.
  • Tiered pot fountain - This is a fun project which is a quick and easy one since you don’t really need all that many materials and tools. Take the time to trawl the gardening stores to find the perfect pots. And if you don’t have too much space and want to downsize, you can always use just two pots instead of three (alternatively, you can add another pot if you want it even bigger).
  • Teapot fountain – if you can get your hands on an old (empty, of course) whiskey barrel and teapot, these will make the starting foundation for an absolutely vintage looking water feature. The whiskey barrel will form the “pond” and the teapot the fountain pouring into the pond. This is a very cost effective and rustic looking feature.
  • Mini water garden – if you don’t have enough space or time to build a pond but still desperately want a water feature, then try your hand at making your own mini pond. All you need is an empty plant pot (not with filtration holes) filled with water and to fill it with water lilies. Make sure that the water lilies are not too big for the pot! Having this on your balcony will definitely beautify it!

Garden creativity ….

With a bit of creative thinking and time, you will be surprised at what materials you can use to make water features. Not all the items need to be bought new – recycle and re-use!

Getting the right materials and advice for your water feature project isn’t that difficult – you just need to contact the experts in the field, Pool Spa & Filtration. From pool accessories to water features, Pool Spa & Filtration will be able to assist you. 3. Asian influence: water features are influenced by a number of different cultures. If you need some Zen in your life than a concrete Asian inspired fountain is ideal for you. Use it in a stone lined area and let the soothing sounds of the water flow through you as you sit out on your patio at night.
  4. Table top fountain: a new trend that is taking over is having smaller water features placed around the home. One of the most popular designs is that of the table top fountain that is full of character. These table top fountains are small and quaint and can fit perfectly onto any size table, indoors or out. It is a great conversation starter at the next party you host.
  5. Classic statue: although it is a classic, this type of fountain is still extremely popular. Whether you are looking for a Greek or Victorian style statue it can certainly add that extra level of sophistication to your home. This fountain should be placed in an area that is highly visible. It will be the showstopper as people walk around your home, while providing you with beautiful sounds of the trickling water.

Tips for effective pool maintenance – keeping your pool clean the whole year round!

Spring is around the corner and soon you will want to enjoy the crystal blue waters of your swimming pool once again. Taking professional advice with regard to effective pool maintenance will help you to enjoy a perfect pool all year round.

During winter, pools will often be neglected. Even if you have a pool cover to protect from the debris that falls, you might still fall victim to a green and murky pool. Pool maintenance is of high importance if you do not want to spend lots of unnecessary money on fixing common problems. If you are able to follow these basic tips, you will not always have to call on the professionals to get rid of all of the grime:

  1. Daily duties: when your pool cover is off, you will need to conduct some duties every few days. This includes skimming the top of the pool for any debris that may have fallen. You can do this easily by using a pool net. This process will not take too much time out of your day and will ensure that you have a safe, clean pool. After all, there is nothing worse than swimming in a pool that is filled with leaves and bugs!
  2. Creepy crawly: one of the best investments that you can make for your pool is purchasing a creepy crawly. This machine will suck up any debris and grime that has fallen to the bottom. You can put it on a timer so that it only turns on at certain times throughout the day or night. The creepy crawly comes with a basket that will need to be cleared out once every few days.
  3. Pool sock: another great invention for decreasing the amount of debris is the pool sock. It is attached to one of the pump holes and creates a current so as to draw in heavy debris.
  4. Brush it down: the creepy crawly, although effective, cannot reach all of the corners of your pool. Purchasing a pool brush and brushing the sides of the pool at least once a week will stop the build-up of algae. This job does require some elbow grease, but it is necessary if you want to have a clean and safe pool for the entire family.
  5. Back wash: back washing your pool is necessary, especially if it is green. It will help to get rid of the dirty water and will give you the opportunity to fill up with clean water. Also remember to keep an eye on the water levels during the summer months. Pool water can evaporate quickly when the weather is hot and will need to be topped up.
  6. Cleaning products: using chlorine will help to keep the pH level at the right place. Purchasing a pH kit will help you to test the water if necessary.

Thankfully, you can keep your pool in tip top shape all year round by implementing the correct maintenance skills.

Swimming pool heat pump – extending the use of your swimming pool

A heat pump uses electricity to operate. They are actually a form of solar heater, as the sun-warmed air contributes to the efficiency of these units. This heat is extracted from the air, upgraded with a compressor and then transferred to the water. For those who enjoy swimming regardless of the weather, a heat pump is the recommended method. It is also the preferred method for therapy or athletic trainers, and also when a home is not "solar feasible" (i.e. solar will not fit on roof.) Due to their high efficiency, heat pumps have a low cost of operation.

Why Heat My Pool?

You bought your pool for a number of reasons like family fun, exercise, entertaining and possibly even therapeutic reasons. However you've probably found that without heating your pool it's often too cold to enjoy. Heating your pool will allow you to enjoy it all season, perhaps all year round, thereby increasing the return on your sizable investment

Types of Heat Pump Pool Heaters

There are two basic types of pool heat pumps. The most common is an "Air-Source", the other being "Water-Source". Air Source Heat Pumps use air as a heat source. Water Source Heat Pumps get their heat source from water i.e. lake, river, or well water. Water source units are generally used for special applications; for more information call our help desk at 800-333-9276.

Longevity and Maintenance

Heat pumps will typically last between 10 to 15 years or more. Because heat pumps are a mechanical device with many moving parts, they require periodic service by an A/C technician. Heat pump factory warranties vary from 5 - 15 years.

Choosing the Right Type of Heating System

There are three basic types of pool heating systems: Solar, Electric Heat Pump and Gas (Natural or Lp/Propane). Deciding which system is best for you and your pool is determined by considering the factors below:

Water temperature desired • Swimming season desired • Geographic location / climate • Spending plans / project budget • The size/shape of the pool, plus shading/wind factors • Cost of operation

Being able to enjoy your swimming pool for longer than the summer months allow is why you should consider making this investment.

Finding the best heat pump for your swimming pool is easy if you know who to contact. Pool Spa & Filtration will be able to help you with this. From swimming pool accessories to pool filters, Pool Spa & Filtration will have just what you need to keep your pool in top condition the whole year round!
